In the 16th century, the Ponnyam Village was the site of a famous duel between the legendary warrior Thacholi Othenan and his master, Kathirur Gurukkal, at the Ezharakandam field. This duel, known as "Ankam," ended with Othenan beheading his master through an unethical move called Poozhikadakam. Othenan was later shot dead by Mayankutty, another disciple of the master, in an act of revenge.
